Share Your World – January 8, 2018

Here is Cee’s Share Your World questions and my responses:

Do you prefer a bath or shower?

What do I prefer? I prefer taking a bath, but for practical reason, I take shower 99% of the time because It takes less time. There are days when I’m physically exhausted or mentally stressful, I like to take a hot bath with Epsom salt, Concentrated mineral bath soak with Eucalypti and Chamomile, and lavender bubble bath. I soak in the bath with headphone on, listening to my favorite Romantic Adagio CD. It helps to relax my muscles.

What do you do to make a living or during the day? If you are retired what mostly occupies your day? Or if you are a student what are you studying?

I’m retired but I am working and have a busy schedule.

I own an after-school care business. Even though I have several people help me doing the tutoring, teaching Chinese and providing childcare, I do all the things that an employer does.

Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays are gym days when I work out with my husband.

Thursdays and Fridays, I take poetry, watercolor, and chorale classes for the retirees at Cal State University in Fullerton.

Not to mention that gardening is my regular routine of the day. I also have church activities several times a week.

Is there a stuffed animal in your bedroom?

No, I don’t, and I have never had a stuffed animal for myself.

The rain finally came last night. It rained all night and it has been raining lightly but steadily all day. I  worried about my garden. Usually, this time of the year provides rain to soak the soil and prepare the soil for spring. This is our first rain of the winter. I hope it will rain a few more time before spring.

What household chore do you absolutely hate doing?

I don’t like to do dusting at all. The house gets dusty so quickly due to the drought and winds.

We don’t have enough rain in southern California to clean the air. It gets worse when Santa Ana winds appear. The winds are strong, extremely dry and down-slope winds that originate from inland affect the coastal southern California. Santa Ana winds are known for the hot dry weather in the fall, but they can arise at other times of the year. These winds, which can easily exceed 40 miles per hour, carry the dust for miles and drop them anywhere on the way.

I’m in the middle of writing this post and found out that the Santa Ana winds just caused several wildfires in southern California. The winds are blowing 50 to 70 miles per hours. The fire broke out in the middle of the night last night and was burning at nearly an acre per second. About 150,000 people in Los Angeles were affected by evacuation orders for the Creek fire near Sylmar and Lake View Terrace. One horse escaped from the fire and fell into a crack upside down. It was kicking the wall for hours until it got the attention. The firefighters were able to break the wall from inside to rescue the horse. It was given the anesthesia and taken to the hospital.

A friend’s son and the family live in the fire zone. His wife took the girls to drive 120 miles through local streets from Ojai to Fullerton City to stay with my friend. In the meantime, my friend’s son stayed behind to take care of his students and their families.

At what time in your recent past have you felt most passionate and alive?

I am a volunteer counselor. I’m passionate about helping people with emotional needs. I feel alive when I listen and focus on what they are going through and help them process their struggles. Many ladies, who sought help, expressed that I was the first person who listened to them. The counseling helped them to process their grief, anger, abuse, and other kinds of sufferings. At the end, they were able to experience self-forgiveness, forgiving, love, and a new life!

I got my master’s degree in counseling. I did full-time counseling for two years. Then my life took a turn, and I became an educator – a teacher and a school district administrator. After I retired from my education career, I decided to do some volunteer work that makes a difference.

What inspired you or what did you appreciate this past week?  Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.

I appreciate the privilege of being alive which is not something I take for granted.

Three of my friends are battling with the complications of long-term illnesses. One friend started with lung cancer and cancer has gone to the brain. Another friend started with a heart problem and is now battling with lung problems. Yet another friend who started with the brain tumor a year ago, the news today was that the family requested setting up the hospice at home.

This is my response to Cee’s Share Your World – November 13, 2107

Do you ever sit on a park bench for more than ten minutes?

We do that often, especially in Laguna Lake. My husband and I love to walk around Laguna Lake which is 0.77 miles around. We walk around the lake twice, then find a shaded bench and sit down. The lake is a home to many kinds of ducks, Egyptian Geese, turtle and many sea creatures. The irrigation system keeps the water of the lake flowing while there is stillness on a calm day. In the summer, the ducks enjoy their lazy nap by tugging their heads under the wings. We relax and watch people doing their leisure fishing, riding their horses, their bikes, jogging, walking their dogs, or walking their babies in strollers.

When you lose electricity in a storm, do you light the candles, turn on the flashlight or use your cell phone for light?

We do all of them. My husband has a large rechargeable industrial lantern by the bed upstairs. We have different sizes of flashlights. When the electricity is out due to a storm or other reasons, I usually turn on a small flashlight to find the lighter to light the candles. As soon as I have five or six candles lit, I would turn off the flashlight. Candles light up the immediate areas around each candle. With several candles. We could see quite well walking around the house.

Would you rather be given $10,000 for your own use or $100,000 to give anonymously to strangers?

Given $10,000 for my own use would only benefit me. But given $100,000 to give to strangers would benefit many people. I would give $500 to each individual and $1000 to each family. So, it would benefit more than 100 individuals and families.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “which/witch/wich.” Start your post with the word “which” and try to fit the word “witch” in somewhere if you can. – Linda G Hill

Which auction items do I want to purchase tonight?” I wondered. It was our church fellowship group annual fundraising for the missionaries this evening.

The program included the silent auction and verbal auction. The silent auction was done half an hour before the verbal auction. Dinner was served during the verbal auction. The main dish for the dinner was bratwurst sausage sandwich, mashed potatoes, and coleslaw.

There were about 40 silent auction items and 22 for the verbal auction. The silent auction included some items people donated and some breakfasts, lunches, dinners, or game nights people sponsored. I had the calendar open on my phone ready to check on the dates.

When the Master of Ceremony announced the time to start the silent auction. I was fortunate to be standing by some activities sheet, so I quickly signed up for five, three for women (myself), one for both my husband and I, and one for men (my husband). During the verbal auction, I bid on two items and won both.

It was another pleasant night out for my husband and I. We enjoyed it as well as love to support the missionaries.

Friday Night Treat

I was away from home for three weeks helping my daughter to take care of my first granddaughter. While I was gone, my husband did several home improvement projects. I came back to a brighter and lighter color of the interior of the house. He also scrubbed the tiles and put shiny sealant on the front porch. There are still many projects that he will continue to do to make our home look nicer. He enjoys walking around the house and sees his nice touch everywhere.

As a mini celebration, we went to a restaurant for a special treat. He ordered his favorite dish of prime rib, the large cut. He had his regular drink of rum and diet coke. I’m not a drinker, so my he helped me order a glass of wine – Sangria. The wine that we once had when we were in Spain. Perhaps my husband ordered the wine for himself there because I didn’t have any recollection of it. The wine was very sweet at the restaurant, and it was served with ice and some citrus pieces. I had never had wine with ice in it. I took the ice pieces out and put them in another glass. The wine was so sweet that it tasted like fruit juice.

The restaurant was decorated in autumn theme with Raggedy Anne and Andy. There were pumpkins, autumn leaves, and roosters (I don’t know why roosters). I like the different shades of orange color of autumn. It was a pleasant night out for us.
