SoCS December 16, 2017 – Winter Bloom

The Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “contrast.”

The Southern California wildfires have been burning for 13 days in Ventura County to Santa Barbara County. Residents described the neighborhood as “war zone.” This is the third largest wildfire in California history. Wildfires have devoured more than 116,000 acres. Smoke stretches 1,000 miles across the Pacific – the distance between New York and Miami. 2017 has been the most expensive year for US wildfires, with damages topping $10 billion.

My heart is heavy for the people who lost their homes and all their treasures. I do pray for rainstorm pouring in this part of the world, to stop the fire and clean the air. Some residents came back to their burned homes, putting up Christmas trees and decorations to bring some cheer to the neighborhood.

CNN – December 17, 2017

The fire zone is about 120 miles from our city, but it surely affects the temperature in this area. In contrast to the past winters, the last two days were in the 80so F during the day. The birds were chirping as if it was spring. The flowers in my garden have a burst of growth.

I would like to present these flowers to the residents who lost their homes in the sense of hope!

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Shades of Pink Flowers

“Pink.  Of course, there are many shades of pink.” – Frank

I can think of a lot of pink things for this challenge. Somehow my thought goes right to the flowers in my garden, I realize there are many shades of pink flowers. In my watercolor painting class, I learn to call the colors by their proper names. Here is a chart of different shades of pink.

I am not going to name my “pink” flowers by their proper names of shades. So they are all pink flowers in my garden. You can find the proper names for my flowers!!

Weekly Photo Challenge – Focus

I usually delete the photos that are not in focus. I’m glad I didn’t have time to delete them all. Now some of the unfocused photos have their value.

At the end of last winter, before most of the flowers bloomed in my garden, I worried that no bees would be there to pollinate my plum tree. To my surprise, the bees swarmed over the clovers behind the retaining wall near the plum tree. I was so excited and took a lot of photos of the bees. Many photos were in nice focus  on the clover flowers and bees.  Since I had to zoom in quite a bit, sometimes my hand was not holding the camera still, and the flowers were unfocused.

It’s delightful to have many butterflies in my backyard. Most of them are yellow. There was a different butterfly flew in last week. It had different color. I took a few photos. The first one was in focus on the butterfly. The second one, the butterfly was out of focus.

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge – Gardens

Cee’s Fun Foto:  “This week the topic is Gardens.  Gardens comes in all shapes and sizes.  They can be of plants, flowers and vegetables or herbs.”

I include a couple photos of large gardens, followed by my small garden with some of the plants and flowers. There are quite a few Date Palms in my garden. They were shorter than me when I first planted them. Now they are taller than me.

On one side of the wall, you may find some nasturtiums in front of and in between the iceberg roses. By another wall, the bougainvillea plant is in full bloom. My jade plants had flowers for the very first time last winter. Roses are my favorite flowers. Other flowers do well in my garden also. My small garden gives me a lot of joy!

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge – May 23, 2017

Paula at “Lost in Translation” posts a question this week: “Have you found beauty this spring? If so, please share it for this Thursday Special themed VERNAL.

Spring is my favorite season. At the end of winter, I started pruning the roses, trimming  other plants, or planting new bulbs. Currently I have forty some rose bushes. When I started planting roses, I almost got all red color. As years go by, I fell in love with other colors. So I have quite a few varieties of roses with yellow, salmon, pink, lavender, and lilac colors.
